VISIT TO THE BIOMASS HEATING PLANT IN THE HUNGARIAN TOWN KOMLO
CEDEF and Cluster for Ecological Energy and Ecological Culture ECOPANONIA, organized its third study trip to Hungary, from 7 to 8 July 2014 . Representatives of local governments and district heating, and energy managers of Serbia were able to obtain specific and helpful information and learn about the experiences and results achieved in the Hungarian town of Komlo, where a heating plant on woody biomass was established in 2008.
Once a mining town, Komlo now uses biomass for heating. There are 25,000 residents and about 5,000 apartments. Centennial heating plant, which have been using coal to provide heat for the population trough the whole century, started using biomass in 2008. Once, Komlo was a poor town, and people were leaving it, but the construction of this heating plant and insulation of buildings and apartments in the city created a unique example of an energy efficient city that achieves remarkable savings. Funds were provided by a donation of the EU, which was 500 million forints, or 45% of the investment. Also, 40% was provided from loans, while 15% participated own heating plant. Thee investment in district heating in Komlo was the largest Hungarian investment that year.
