CEDEF AND PKS II Public Debate
INDUSTRIAL WASTE MANAGEMENT IN THE REPUBLIC OF SERBIA - waste streams and new value in use
Central European Development Forum, CEDEF, organised another Public Debate INDUSTRIAL WASTE MANAGEMENT IN THE REPUBLIC OF SERBIA - waste streams and new value in use, in cooperation with the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and under the institutional auspices of the Ministry of Energy, Development and the Environment, the Ministry of Construction and Urban Planning Republic of Serbia. The speakers agreed that Serbia has a need for plants for the treatment of hazardous and non-hazardous waste from the industry, and that one of the biggest environmental problems in Serbia is inappropriate waste handling. In addition to that, Serbia has more than one million tons of "historical industrial waste”, which is generated in the past in large industrial systems. “Environmental black spots” produce more than 8.2 million tons of industrial waste, of which 7.9 million tons is non-hazardous waste and the remaining part is hazardous waste. According to the latest data from the Agency for Environmental Protection, a very small fraction of industrial waste, 19%, is processed, of which only 1% is used for energy production. Serbia has large and untapped opportunities in this regard, because 81% of industrial waste or about 6.5 million tons still remain in the locations where it is produced.
